Norway will never be the same.
Members and friends of the Labour Party gathered on Utøya could not have known the risk when they allied themselves with an open, democratic society. Almost 70 years ago, members of the German resistance group The White Rose also paid with their lives.
Sophie Scholl was 21 years old when she was arrested for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets. Five days later she was guillotined. The last words of her brother Hans Scholl, executed minutes later: “Long live freedom!”
Long live the spirit of The White Rose. Long live memories of the Oslo men, women and children who died on July 22, 2011. Long live compassionate, beautiful Norway.
Song translated:
My little country.
A little place where a handful of peace gets thrown between the fjords and mountains. My little country, where high mountains are planted between houses and people and words.
Where silence and dreams grow, as an echo in the barren soil.My little country, where the sea gently strokes the back, like a caress from coast to coast.
My little country, where the stars slip by and becomes a landscape when it’s light, while the night is pale and silent.
